Truth in Advertising

Other than Oxyclean, you really can’t trust most product commercials. And I haven’t really gushed about all that many products here at The Cotton Wife. But Honey, I’m here to tell ya that there’s something you have to have if you’re making potato salad or deviled eggs- or just a big ol’ tomato sandwich.

(I don’t know that I’d call myself a “Great Southern Cook” but I do try.)

This is the real deal. It’s not tangy and God forbid it’s not “lite”. Ew. Just the word “lite” is gross, isn’t it? I think it’s my most unfavorite word ever.

See? Note the word “real” on the label. They aren’t kidding, folks. Can you tell we use this stuff? No little jars for us!

Just last week I used this to make chicken salad. With pickles that I made myself. ::Ahem::

Yes, I was just bragging but I’ll balance it out by telling a secret on myself. I made that chicken salad with the dark meat too. I know, I know. I hear your gasps of shock all across America. But it was just for home. If I had taken that poor chicken salad made with dark meat to church or to a family reunion I’d have been talked about for the next hundred years, at least. My reputation would be in shambles.  There are two kinds of chicken salad: for home and for company. “Company” chicken salad only has white meat, of course so that people won’t gossip about your cooking. They’ll just find something else to gossip about.

But back to the mayonnaise!

I’m not kidding about how good it is. When you see the commercials on television for Duke’s – believe them. I make a lot of things from scratch, but I can’t make mayonnaise this delicious. Run out and get some. Now! And then go home, slather it on a homegrown tomato slice and tell me what you think.

Dark meat is way more tender then white! If I’m making a sandwhich for me I always take the dark! Mayo and lettuce and a little pepper yum!

CarinJuly 25, 2008 - 11:13 am

I have never heard of Duke’s before. We must not have it around here. Does Oxyclean really work?

thecottonwifeJuly 25, 2008 - 11:18 am

Oxyclean gets out baby poo! :)

And I’m sensing that I need to have a Duke’s giveaway sometime very, very soon!!

I’ve never heard of it either, but I’m going to the store in a few, so I’m gonna look for it!! I’ll let ya know.

Don’t think Dukes is in Detroit.

I LOVE chicken salad, but make it horribly! Do you use grapes in yours??

KarenJuly 25, 2008 - 11:43 am

We don’t have Duke’s out here either. Just discovered Oxyclean for myself last week. Work great on tomato sauce.

kendraJuly 25, 2008 - 12:21 pm

You know, I’ven never used Oxyclean and I have 2 dirty, country boys. Maybe I should try it. I just have a hard time getting past Billy’s over exuberent personality. Did you see he’s peddling health insurance on an infomercial now? LOL!

I would use dark meat too! And now I want to try that mayo!

I came across this blog the other day and you got some great info here – thanks.

klutzymamaJuly 25, 2008 - 5:13 pm

No Dukes here in podunk! Bummer, I’ll just have to take your word for it.

farmnwifeJuly 25, 2008 - 7:19 pm

Haven’t seen it here in the mid-west. But we aren’t big mayo eaters. I like mayo but not many others in the house.

yes, yes, yes on the Duke. I don’t bother with anything else. I also use the whole chicken for texture as much as superior flavor of dark meat. Duke’s is a treasure.

ROFL I loved this post. Thanks for letting us in on your secret and a great product as well!

Kristi SmithJuly 25, 2008 - 10:47 pm

Nope, no Dukes here. Could you just send me some of your chicken salad? I don’t care if you use the dark meat. ;)

CautionJuly 26, 2008 - 9:09 am

Never heard of Dukes before, but this morning I’m reading a book called The Wedding Machine and it’s set in South Carolina. Here’s a quote from it, “My wife thinks there’s nothing Duke’s Mayonnaise can’t cure.” Two references in 24 hours!

AlyiceEdrich.comJuly 26, 2008 - 10:42 am

So tell me, does it taste oily? I hate mayo that tastes oily. I do use, ummm…Miracle Whip Light…I know it’s more like a dressing, but I like it. I used to eat Best Foods Mayo but it’s gotten to be a bit yucky tasting the past few years. Maybe my taste buds are changing.

thecottonwifeJuly 26, 2008 - 1:11 pm

I am so going to have to get that book! Amazon.com here I come!!

Alyice, It’s really not oily at all. But then again, I cook with bacon grease so I’m not the best judge!

And no grapes in my chicken salad – CottonHusband would pitch a fit! He’s very, very picky.

I think you might find yourself in retail marketing before long, Jenn! Sounds like Dukes has a very specific little nitch since we don’t have Dukes in Montana either. Since your have now spread the word, you’ll just have to spread the goods!! I can already invision a contest in the works since you have us salivating…..deviled eggs, tomato sandwiches, potato salad, pasta salad. Hold the mustard and pass the Dukes!!

Razor Family FarmsJuly 26, 2008 - 11:46 pm

I’ve never even heard of Duke’s mayonnaise!!!! Wow! Must be good stuff though!
Blessings!

[...] Even though I’m not eligible (darn it!) I’ll kick things off. Actually this is not so much a recipe as it is a way to avoid looking like a piggie by eating plain tomatoes dipped in mayonnaise. And it’s also relieving my conscience since I was so mean to poor chicken legs the other day. [...]

I’ve always been a Kraft kindof girl, but I might just have to pick up a jar of Duke’s next time I run out of mayo. I hate the word “lite”, too. That’s why I never use light products, or maybe because they mostly taste like wet cardboard.
