Of Birds and Sisters-In-Law…

header

My sister-in-law called me this morning very bubbly and excited.

“Have you seen any migratory birds lately?!?”

I…

uh…

well…

At that point I figured it was too late to lie.

So I just said, “Donna, I have no damned idea.”

And of course she was all, “Jennifer! You were going to LIE TO ME!”

Busted.

So I promised her that I would go out and look for migratory birds. I vaguely heard something about yellow-bellied-biscuit-eaters and purple-swallowtail-snickersbar before I rushed out of the door.

Look! Evidence of birds, at least.

m9

Well. Here’s one thing NOT migrating.

m7

Here! Here is a migrating Camoflage-Whirly-Chopper. These are plentiful in our area.

m5

Ooh! What is this? Perhaps this is the elusive migrating bird. Or maybe it’s just a butterfly.

Darned zoom lens wouldn’t reach that far. I guess we’ll never know.

Shopping in a Small Town

(From time to time I’ll be writing about items I love or household hints or what I consider farmgirl style. Heck, I should probably be asking y’all what to do with those shutters I dug out of the trash heap that one time… I do love to go junking. So with apologies to the uninterested I have added a new category: Padding the Nest.

-Jennifer)

We live approximately forty-five minutes from any sort of mall, big-box store or in other words – something that is not a gas station convenience store.

But there are a few exceptions and one in particular keeps me sane: Miss Robin’s shop.

Robin is a hairdresser but by the grace of God she saw fit to include a gift shop in her hair salon. I can pop in anytime for a quick jewelry fix or to get a yummy bar of soap or these fantastic MaggiB purses that I ADORE. I am addicted to them now. I have to have one for every season.

Some of you might be saying, “But wait. You have a new baby. You won’t be carrying a pretty purse for the next eleventy billion years.” The solution to this is buy the biggest MaggiB bag Robin stocks and use that as my diaper bag. Problem solved! They are gorgeous, affordable (Hush up, Cotton Husband- they are too!) and functional and by golly, I love them.

And how could I have left without taking this apron with me? It was CALLING MY NAME, people.

I admit, I absolutely cannot justify this purchase. It’s a MaggiB apron, so I’m not gonna cook in it. Maybe I could wear it out with a cute tshirt and jeans. Hmmm…

The Soybeans, They Are A-Changin’

soybean5

If you look out over the field beside our house, you can see that some of the soybeans are starting to mature.

soybean1

Our field is two-toned, if you will.

soybean2

Please excuse the cotton trailer. We’re currently recovering from Sweetpea’s 5th birthday party…

Keith

Oh, where did that come from?!?!

soybean3

… and we’re leaving it out until our haunted hayride in mid-October.

soybean4

The Cotton Husband (Soybean Husband?) planted two different varieties of soybeans here and one is an early crop. I love the color soybeans turn as they mature – it’s an early shot of fall.

soybean6

I’d love to tell you the exact variety but I really have no idea what they are. They are an early variety. That’s what I heard CH (SH?) and I’m sticking with that. They’re an early variety.

Why are they planted in the same field?  Uhhhhh.

What are the benefits to doing this? Hmmmmm.

Which one yields the most beans? ::throat clearing::

Thank y’all for visiting this specific, informative agricultural site and have a great day!
