  • Welcome!

I'm a farm wife, a mama and a photographer living in Virginia.

My camera is typically filled with images of sunrises, dusty fields, even dustier children and whatever we happen to be planting or harvesting at the time.

    Thanks for visiting the farm!

A Hayride

One would think that as busy as we are harvesting this time of year that we’d let Halloween sort of pass by without much thought.

But we found out a few years ago that people LOVE hayrides. Love ‘em, I tell ya.

So now we have a haunted hayride every year in October.

It’s not so scary.

The Cotton Husband and his friends spend the afternoon tying up my good white sheets in the trees…

and sticking our wooden cutout of a Colonial man in the woods (Frankly, that just makes everyone laugh).

One year they plopped rubber turkey decoys in the trees. And deer horns in the branches. Yeah – we really strive to terrify folks over here, y’all.

But one of the best parts is getting ready for the hayride. We’re all together… working to clean the house, making brownies and getting the yard ready for guests. And we’re throwing hay. There’s lots of throwing hay going on.

Those picture are great. You can really see how much CH and Peanut look alike in those pictures of him. WOW!

My inlaws did a hayride one year. Everyone dressed up and rode around the cabin area at the lake. They had a lot of fun and hangovers the next day!

First….love that last picture. LOVE IT!

Second….we are also scheduled to have a hayride this week. On Saturday. For my sister and her kids, and her friends and their kids. Last night my husband says to me. I think I’ll get a scary mask and take the chain off my saw (aka…his girlfriend) wait in the woods and you can drive the tractor. UMMMM NO! Cause it will scare the tar out of me and my nephew may be scarred for life. Your hubby doesn’t do anything like that does he? He looks so kind and agreeable in these photos.

No, my husband pulls the trailer around with his truck. BUT… his friends do things like that. Last year they had chainsaws (two of them are loggers) but this year one of the moms FORBADE chainsaws (in a teasing way of course), so her husband puts on a mask and JUMPS – screaming – onto the trailer. He got his comeuppance when he tried to vault off and landed in the pine trees.

Your girls are beautiful, so happy and ready for the big hayride.

I love hayrides too! I miss ‘em. I wonder if there is a place arounde here. Hmmmm.

I think these are my favorite pictures yet. The few of the Cotton Husband are exceptional. You almost feel like you are looking into the soul of a farmer.

Sounds like a lot of fun!
I don’t know what it is about hay and exhaust smells that draws the people.
Lots of laughter!!

I remember the last hay ride I went on. Half way into the ride it started sleeting ice & snow. We were all wrapped up in blankets and still freezing! It was fun, but we were glad to get back inside to the warmth of a fireplace and hot drinks. I personally think anytime you can ride around in the open air it’s fun ;)

oh, I forgot. Your girls are so pretty! Love that red hair! :)

Those girls of yours look like true country bumpkins…too cute! I love that peanut sign…I would totally have that hanging in my kitchen. It is too cool!

thecottonwifeOctober 30, 2008 - 9:21 am

Judi, your kitchen must be HUGE!

Just for some perspective – that sign is sitting on top of two 50 gallon drums. :)

I could mayyyybe put it on my ceiling. Hey – that’s an idea! I can’t wait to see the Cotton Husband’s face when I tell him my new plan! He’ll be SO thrilled.

That crazy logger with the chainsaw wouldn’t happen to be one of my relatives would it? My kids (teenagers) would really love to go to the JC’s haunted house I used to go to. There were no things off limits there. You all have such fun. Keep it up; you’re creating wonderful memories.
