  • Welcome!

I'm a farm wife, a mama and a photographer living in Virginia.

My camera is typically filled with images of sunrises, dusty fields, even dustier children and whatever we happen to be planting or harvesting at the time.

    Thanks for visiting the farm!

Opening Day

Opening day of deer season began rainy and yucky. Did it stop anyone from going hunting? Nope.

Fortunately the rain tapered off (even though it was about 100 degrees – whew!) and I could bring Peanut out for a visit.

Did you know REAL hunters wear pink?

They do.

Our two oldest girls spent most of the day hunting with the Cotton Husband. CH used to hunt alone… having the freedom to go wherever he liked… say whatever he liked. Oh, how things have changed!

I think he likes it that way though. He gets to impart his knowledge and wisdom to a new generation (are you all laughing yet?).

When it got dark outside, I kept looking for them to come home. I should have known better. They’d been sucked in by “The Lodge”, as the hunt club is affectionately known. Truth be told, it’s just an old hog house that the guys fixed up (a little). It’s a great place for children to play hide and seek, chalk on the concrete block walls and well… just be kids.

The big kids like The Lodge just as much as the little ones do. It’s a turn your cap around kind of place.:)

How wonderful to see parents(fathers) taking time to do things with there girls. Those are three pretty girls. When will you have a contest and give away some of that great home made soap?

thecottonwifeNovember 18, 2008 - 12:24 pm

I wish I could make soap, Ellie K! Are you thinking of Lacy over at Razor Family Farms by chance?

What a fun post. I am sure that CH likes imparting his wisdom. There is nothing more fun that watching a child trying to figure out what the heck you trying to teach them.

What sweet memories I have of sitting in the freezing cold deer blind with my dad, being so quiet and still, waiting for a deer to show up. lol

I was one with nature.

Sorry, I do have you mixed up with another blog. I read yours every day razor farms most of the time. I know your skills are many, I do admire you with all the things you do.

This comment isn’t revelant to this particular post, sorry. I’ve been reading in your archives and just finished the post and comments on favorite smells. I’ve loved it. Some of my favorite smells are tomato plants, the air after a summer shower, Johnson’s baby shampoo and Jergen’s original scent hand lotion. The hand lotion reminds me of my grandmother.
Also, do you ever boil the peanuts? I love boiled peanuts. Reading your post about harvesting them just made me start craving them. Oh, how I wish I could have been at your farm then. Of course, I’d probably be sick from eating too many peanuts. :)

Margie,

When we get together and eat peanuts, you may have ALL the boiled ones!!

LOL CW, a quick glance at TV commercials since Nov. 4 show an imbalance if you ask me… :) But I’m not supposed to notice or say anything about it.

Hunters in the making!!! Of course you cant leave the girls out!!

Both of my girls took gun safety right along with the “all boy” classes. They were pretty proud of themselves as they had better aim than most of the boys in the classes.

Three cheers for dads who take their kids out during the oh-so-short, cherished gun season.

Jennifer, I just noticed your “Send Mail” photo! That is too cute!
