Whenever I visit a doctor, the office people are always very VERY interested in my employer.
I always write “Self” since well… we’re self-employed.
Once in a while the doctor will take a gander at my chart and ask what I do.
Apparently doctors harbor secret desires of being farmers because rather than rushing me out, they always want to sit and talk about what we grow
and the price of beans
and how many acres we have
and what brand of tractors we use
and if we irrigate
and how we irrigate
and (here’s the biggie)… if we hunt our land.
So I always come out of appointments with lots of facetime with the Big Man (or Woman) and leave behind an invitation to “just come on down any ol’ time – we’ll be happy to show you around!”.
Needless to say the anesthesiologist in the Labor and Delivery unit would get homecooked meals, accomodations and heck – I’d even throw in a foot rub.
If the doctor is happy, then I’m happy.

I love thos pictures. Very beautiful farms down there! I love the great big barns. They just don’t make barns like that anymore.
Your blog always makes me smile. Thanks
That is so true. My husband and I were just talking about this same topic when he went to the doctor last week. But I never thought to make a post out of it! Thanks for making me laugh.
Oops, forgot to tell you I have been thinking of taking a few photos of the farms near ours before you did this so hope you won’t think I am a copycat. I am… but it’s just a form of flattery.
Not at all! There’s no telling how many people I copied with this post… I can’t imagine that I’m all THAT original.
We farm sweet potatoes, so I know what you mean. Nobody has ever met a sweet potato farmer! I enjoy talking about the farm, anyway. Sometimes it seems more trouble than it’s worth, until you start telling someone else about it. Then you realize why you love it so much!
I used to work on a cattle property and a cotton farm here in Australia and people find it very interesting. Your photo’s are beautiful and of course the doctors find you interesting you are a fascinating woman with a story to tell. Keep talking about farms….I miss them.
I would pay big bucks to have that type of conversation with my doctor. Seriously….but that’s a whole different topic.
The photos as always are gorgeous. I’m curious, when does your growing season start there?
LOLLOL! Jennifer – they do the same thing to me!! I feel like I am paying them to fulfill thier fantasies! BAD docs!!
I love your pictures – as always, they are awesome! In our town, the dentist (the one in the pics from yesterday) is also a farmer. He’s got the best of both worlds, I guess.
Karen,
We start planting corn, cotton and beans in April… peanuts get planted in May. It’s right around the corner!

I run into the same thing! Only mine comes from the following: they see my last name and ask “are you related to Dr. samelastname?” I say ‘yes, that’s my father in law”…they say oh, is your husband a veterinarian too? I say no, he’s a farmer. Oh, really?! And off it goes into a long conversation about farming and whether or not we have hay for sale.
Big as that house looks, it still seems as though the Cotton Carpenter is going to have to build an addition!
Confession: I grew up in a busy town right on the border of a big city and I always wanted to be a farmer. I thought I’d be good at it. I’m a city girl through and through, but I recently told my fiance (a tennis pro) that if he ever had the desire to run off and be a farmer or work on a horse ranch, I’d totally support that decision. Naturally, he thought I was drunk.
