  • Welcome!

I'm a farm wife, a mama and a photographer living in Virginia.

My camera is typically filled with images of sunrises, dusty fields, even dustier children and whatever we happen to be planting or harvesting at the time.

    Thanks for visiting the farm!

Back To The Farm

Once upon a time, a magazine editor took a look at my blog and proclaimed that I wrote too much about kids and family.

Well, duh.

We’re a family farm.

Don’t you just know he must be a real joy to work for too…

“What do you mean you want more than one day off at Christmas?”

“A sick child at home? What’s this “home” you speak of? And what is a child??”

I do try to keep a balance over her at the Cotton Wife, but to be real honest there isn’t a lot goin’ on this time of year besides equipment maintenance and I would have to ask eleventy billion questions of the Cotton Husband in order to write about that and to paraphrase him, “he ain’t studying about that”.

Translation: It would annoy him to no end to have me over his shoulder taking photos and asking questions about mechanics.

There is one thing in particular happening though.

We’re growing rye again this year.

It’s not tall enough for use as a photo background yet but it’s getting there.

Right now it’s keeping our soil nice and protected against all the snow and rain and wind.

In other words, it’s doing its job and not asking for those pesky sick days and holidays.

You have to be kidding me? Someone really said you write too much about your kids. Give me the name and I’ll pay that person a visit. I, my dear, happen to like reading and seeing your kids and family!

I’m with commentor #1. That’s pretty much why I started my blog, so that I could talk about my grandchildren.

And maybe when I’m dead and gone, they can go back, read my entries and remember how insane their grandmother really was.

Course, ther’s always the possibility my children could use my entries against me in a sanity hearing.

Well, that’s nonsense. There are audiences for all kinds of blogs.

Anyway, I bet no editor would tell you to keep posting pictures of your rye as it grows. Which is what I’m hoping for. :)

What? That is half of your appeal. It makes up a great deal of what is so attractive about your lifestyle. Who wouldn’t want to look at your beautiful little girl sitting in the heaven of her mama’s kitchen.

Regarding the rye…..does it smell the same when it is fresh as it does once it has been baked in bread, or are these even the same thing?

I’m always amazed at people who actually have the nerve to try to tell people what to talk about on their blogs. If you don’t like or are not interested in what the person is writing about, it’s very simple, don’t read it. Sheesh! This editor sounds like a real piece of work.
I love seeing all of those little red-headed sweeties! :-)

Well, all I have to say is that my blog would drive him nuts! I am all over the place, and that is fine by me. ;) Maybe that is why the magazine industry is struggling. Not enough real life.
Anyway, I like to see those little redheaded darlings with chocolate fingers. :)
Have a great weekend!!!

We did winter wheat this year again, and I love to see the bright GREEN amidst the winter gray sky…yes, even in Florida winter is quite drab. I love the picture of your little one taking a ride on the shovel…too precious for words.

I would love to kiss those little chocolate fingers! They look too good not to.

Grandma!

I agree! Isn’t a blog all about what YOU want to write about?!?
I too wuld love those sweet little fingers!! Too cute! Beautiful photography!!

I love that you write about your family, farm and way of living. Even though I live on a farm it is a small farm and we both have full time jobs as our main income. We have no children besides our pets and I feel like your family is my second family. I love your blog and keep up the good work. It always brings a smile to my face!

It’s ALL good! It’s neat to see something green actually growing, we won’t see that for months yet. Can I have some cake too please?

Re the magazine editor:
1. He apparently does not read the comments
2. He is jealous of your wonderful life!

With God as my witness, when you paraphrase Keith Warthan, I can actually hear his voice saying those words – plain as day! And if I live to be 1000, I will hear the voices and laughter and see in my mind’s eye Ruth and Marvin Warthan
