  • Welcome!

I'm a farm wife, a mama and a photographer living in Virginia.

My camera is typically filled with images of sunrises, dusty fields, even dustier children and whatever we happen to be planting or harvesting at the time.

    Thanks for visiting the farm!

Our Worlds

k11

Although the Cotton Husband and I technically work together in the family business, our day to day lives are completely different.

k1

For instance, he gets to sit on a tractor all day long every day and listen to the radio in total peace.

k2

He can eat M&M’s without having to share and make phone calls all the live-long day.

k3

I have my suspicions that in warm weather, he curls up under a tree and sleeps for a few hours.

k4

And in his version of events…

k5

I get to cuddle with happy, docile, chubby babies all day.

k6

and while they are taking their five hour naps simultaneously, I eat bon-bons and surf the internet and take wonderful naps along with them.

k7

According to him, I never have to change poopy diapers.

k8

And lots of times I forget that equipment breaks down

or gets clogged up.

k9

Or gets stuck.

k10

Maybe we should trade places for one whole day.

I feel confident the kids would bounce back but the farm may never recover.

I LOVE THIS! I can relate to it a little bit, too!

Sgt. Grumpy and I argue about who’s life is harder. He says it is a mistake for me to think that poking and prodding 18-20 yrs olds around all day qualifies as a ‘break’ from parenting small children. I say he is wrong and the time I spend sitting quietly in a bookstore playing on the internet is a well deserved interlude from the chaos that hits the house at 3:00 every day when the monsters come storming in.

I love your site. I’m just up the road in Chesterfield, out in the country (what’s left of it!). I found you on PW…great site & keep posting.

Oh how I wish that I could trade places with my husband just for one day. Hopefully it would be on a day that his clients decide to take him to ruth chris again…
and it’s my laundry day. ;)

I don’t know…well, I’m sure the kids might bounce back, but I’m not sure your husband would :) After staying at home for a few days with my girls, my husband admits that he could never stay home full time with our children like I do…. It is funny though how we have different perceptions of what the other spouse does all day :) But I know for a fact my husband plays Mafia Wars on Facebook way more often than he should :) hehe!

Isn’t this the way it is in all relationships, whether it’s your spouse, your children, your co-workers.

But whatever you two find to do, I bet you are both pretty tired when the day is done.

I can’t tell you how many times I wish my husband and I could switch places for a day. I would love to sit at a desk and design buildings and let him watch our 3 kids plus the 4 I babysit all day. I think I’d come home to a bald man because he’d pull all of his hair out.

Oh how right you are!
Funny!
They think just because we’re home that we’re chillin’ all day.

Jennifer- someone said to my farmer-husband once, “It must be so relaxing to ride around in a tractor all day.” He looked at the guy like he was crazy–that guy had no clue what a farmer’s day is like! And then people say to me,”Oh you stay home all day? You must get so much done!” yeah, whatever…

Great post…thanks!

YEAP! The grass is always greener…. ain’t it?!?! :)

Sandra HendersonFebruary 28, 2010 - 11:02 am

P.S.
I posted something on my blog about how living on an island “ain’t” all that glamorous either….. carrying groceries down a long dock after handling 10 times.
Yours truly, In search of a perfect world….. nope it would be VERY boring!

Kim FinkFebruary 28, 2010 - 4:43 pm

Amen sister! I am convinced my farmer husband does the same thing. I also work in town full time and still have to do all the laundry, cleaning, and cooking by myself. At least I am not alone!
