Every single day someone finds my website because they’ve searched for something about a small town.
“What to do in a small town”
“Where to go at night in a small town”
“Small town on the weekend”
“Small town Saturday night” (Although I think that’s a song… but still)
So – if you’re wondering, here’s what a small town is:
It’s spotting your UPS man in town, then walking his way because you know he has a package for you…
and him recognizing you and grabbing your delivery without even having to pause to remember your name.
Or maybe I just shop online way too much.

The UPS man knows to come to the office (not the delivery address) and if my truck is there he puts the package in the back – if not he’ll bring it to the house – go figure!! Guess I shop online as much as you do. Hate the mall!
uh yeah, small towns definitely mean shopping on-line! I had 4 packages last week, LOL . Our population here is less that 400, no stores, just a post office. Your town is darling!
Oh…..to live in a small town.
Yes, I googled “small town” and came upon your blog. I’ve been looking for other “small towners” in the blogosphere. The idea of me calling a pop. 15,000 city (with 25,000 people in the area) “small” may seem laughable to many, but it’s smaller than what I’m used to. While the FedEx guy doesn’t know me yet, he did give me his home phone number, in case no one was at the warehouse when I came to pick up a package.
What is the old brick building on the left in the photo? It looks just the like the old Masonic Temple building on the square in my little town.
Having been a military wife for 20 years and living in countless places, there’s no place like a small town. I don’t think my home place (which is where we live now) is even considered a “town”! If you’re driving down the main highway there is this little green sign that says the name and then before you know it another that says leaving…so and so…! The kiddos drive 13 miles to school one way. But, the best part, having just lost my mother 2 weeks ago, is the people. So much love and caring. Didn’t have to cook for a week because of the amount of food brought in. I’m truly blessed
Love this picture.
I know my postman as well. I also obviously shop too much.
I don’t do much online shopping, yet. My town isn’t that small. But I come from a small town in WV and I know just exactly what you are talking about.
Most complaints I hear about small towns is that everyone knows everyones business. It’s true. But they know the bad AND the good. And they are the first ones to help when help is needed. I love small town USA. I am slowly converting my little community to small town USA. They’ll come around, I’m sure of it!!
What’s really scary…..the UPS and FedEx drivers deliver to my office in town so they don’t have to drive out to our house. My question is how’d they know where I worked the first time they had a delivery for me? lol
As a teenager, I dreamed of the day I could blow my pop stand of a small town. Now, I have absolutely no desire to leave it’s safety. The people I work with can’t imagine that I leave my front door unlocked during the day while I’m at work, and think nothing of it.
Well, now I’m sad because I got a Christmas card from someone and did not recognize the name. It took us weeks to figure out she lives right behind us. I guess we’re not small town
Ha I L-O-V-E IT.
I know you just did this to tease me didn’t you!!!!
oh, and by the way I now have the Cheers theme song stuck in my head from this post. ha ha
Klutzymama,
According to He Who Knows All, that used to be the Chevrolet dealership in Waverly.
Maybe it used to be something else before his time…
Yep, that’s a small town for ya. We just usually stay on the Ponderosa ’cause what DOES one do in a small town?
Ya’ll have a fantastically blessed day!!!
Is your UPS driver as cute as my UPS driver, and all UPS drivers for that matter? I like a man in brown.
Where to go at night in a small town? Ha, ha, that’s a good one – unless, of course, it’s a Wednesday, then the Baptists are at prayer meetin’.
We live in what used to be a town, with a school and *ahem* cotton gin and a general store/post office. Now it’s just the hubby and me and assorted animals, with the church (still active) and cemetery across the road. The town where we work has a population of about 6,000 and is 18 miles down the road.
I grew up in a large metropolitan area, but I LOVE small town/country livin’!!
I’m a well traveled woman…and enjoy a visit to “the big city” every now and then…but I also love my small hometown. I’m from and still live in Mississippi. We have an abundance of small towns! I once forgot my checkbook in the grocery store. The manager told me to just take my groceries on home and bring him a check on my way home the next day…now that’s SMALL TOWN!
I love your small town too!! I agree with the UPS driver fan club!
gotta love ‘em!!
Hooray for small town USA! Although ours isn’t so ‘small’ anymore. Can’t complain about life in the country with Costco, Target, Starbucks, and Famous Daves about 10 minutes away! The best of both worlds.
Hooray for online shopping too!
I feel like I have come full circle now! Last week, my friend Frannie in KY ask me to checkout stliving and I did. A couple of days ago, I was reading the comments on PW’s site and read your comment concerning your interview with the newspaper. I was fascinated, so thought I would checkout your site, only to find out you write for stliving. Duh!
Your photographs are beautiful!
BTW – I live in the same small town only in rural OK.
Okay, so maybe because we’ve been talking about small towns a lot lately, I had a dream last night that you and your girls loaded up into your suburban (do you have a suburban?) and came to my little town and we all went trick or treating. I was dressed as a dead housewife (original, I know) and you were a sailor. I can’t remember what any of the kids were dressed like except for your oldest, she was dressed as an indian. Weird, I know. But it was a fun dream! lol
My husband and I had a band in he early ’80′s. We actually had band practice in the upper floor. We had a huge cloth backdrop that we used behind us when we played. It said Blackwater. We left it hanging up on the wall upstairs. I wonder if it is still hanging after all these years.
