With a week to go before my youngest babies have their first and second birthdays (respectively), the Cotton Husband has decided to paint the outside of the house.
Here are some observations:
Men love white paint and white paint only.
We’re in the middle of a stifling, overwhelming heat wave. Painting something outside is the last thing on my mind.
Men adore white paint.
The house might look nice for the birthday party but there will be paint chips all over the ground.
Men are afraid of paint with any pigment whatsoever.
I would love to hear any ideas y’all have about what to do before the Cotton Husband breaks out the paint gun. I will be listening while he sticks his fingers in his ears and sings “White paint” over and over and over again.

I love your house the way it is. Tell him to leave it alone!!
How about putting on some shutters in an accent color?
If your farm ever fails, he could get a job for an auto company choosing their new color line. They’re about as creative
Well, I love it like it is and don’t think it needs painting. HOWEVER< you are very lucky that he is so full of energy! I would keep it white because I love the red bans against it (I grew up w/this), but shutters would be so pretty! That's an additional expense and bother though. I think shutters and your front doo are easy ways to add color and CHANGE color every few years!
I'd paint my front door red! Deep Dk green shutters? SO many possibilites.
I use to have a blue house w/yellow shutters and loved it. But, I'm a traditionalist and can't picture your house any other way but white. No help, huh? So glad you told us about the birthdays…..

Lisa is right on!
I love a white house — but shutters are always fun. I think green shutters are my favorite (but blue/black/gray is nice, too). When selling this idea to Keith, tell him that you want real shutters… like actual closing shutters. I think he’ll like the practical application of being able to shut them during hurricane warnings/watches and whatnot. Also, real shutters would preserve the integrity of your house.
Here are two links to photos that I thought you might like:

ok ok, let’em have his white paint, but I agree with painted window shutters, and and nice red door! flower boxes maybe?
I like the shutter idea. Even with white paint some shutters would really accent the house. Plus, there is just something “right” about a white farmhouse.
Cabin Fever in Vermont
A light yellow, and then accent the entrance with a color you like. You can always bring color in with flowers that come back every year. Can you tell I have watch too much HGTV…
That is so funny, I was coming to comment the same thing- shutters! I love color, your know I love color, but your house is meant to be white.
I do love the idea of a bright door- and if you need more color, you can plant some crepe myrtles or knock out roses when it gets cooler.
As for the paint chips, I don’t know. I just asked M. and he said there was no easy way to pick them up. Definitely post after pics!
In the picture it looks like you have a tin roof. I love white farm houses with red, or green, or black painted tin roof. That would give you your color and keith his white.
I have to go with Keith on this topic. All farm buildings, including the house should be white. Unless you have a really cool barn then that has to be red. Otherwise everything white. But a nice magenta door would look great. lol
Black shutters & Red door – otherwise leave the white.
Window boxes?
I agree with the “farmhouses should be white” idea. But also like the idea of shutters and flower boxes! Can’t help you with the paint chip problem though!
I agree with everyone about the shutters! My parents house is tan with green shutters and mine is light yellow with white shutters and trim. I think it makes them look so charming! I think white with dark green shutters would look awesome on your house. And you could add some windowboxes of flowers if you want more color.
I know I just repeated what everyone else has already said.
Seems like everytime you talk about your husband, you remind me of mine! When it came time to pick out the color paint for the guest bedroom (formerly the youngest child’s room), the dh was standing in front of the whites/beiges, while my daughter and I were looking at the chocolate browns. I had already been there earlier in the day to get the paint, and the good ol’ boy in the paint dept. wouldn’t mix the brown paint unless my husband was there to approve. Seriously!! Of course, after being married for 34 years, my sweetie knows when to defer to my judgement, and I got the color I wanted…
Of course, I digress… white farmhouses are lovely, and you could add color with the trim, door, and shutters. Though with that many windows, new shutters could get pricey! A few years ago, we replaced our wooden shutters with the vinyl ones, and they are GREAT! No color fading whatsoever. My house is yellow, with white trim, and dark red shutters and door, and that’s still *my* favorite color combination!
I think a soft yellow would like nice, but agree with the other’s idea of window boxes and plants and a bold door color (red). We did a pale yellow house with dark blue shutters and doors and it always looked so clean and cheerful.
I’d offer to come help but:
1. I don’t like heat
2.I hate to paint
3.I don’t like leaving my house/yard
Otherwise I’d be there! :0)
My husband tells me I can paint it (no matter what IT is) a shade of white
A friend of mine just painted her house dark gray with white trim and a red door. It looks great!
