This has been an unbelievably hot, dry summer here in Virginia.
We’re fortunate to have irrigation, although rain gets the job done much, much better.
Here is one of the systems we have in place… it’s called a reel system.
Water comes out of a nearby mill pond through the pipe and the huge rubber tube and gets sprayed onto the field.
Keith has to drag the spraying part out into whichever part of the field is due for a drink.
Sometimes wayyyyyy out.
It’s a lot of work. A whole lot. But seeing your crops get even just a little water seems worth it.
That’s very interesting. Here in Arkansas, we use two methods. Both involve an irrigation well. One is called a center pivot that, once hooked to the water source, pivots according to preset coordinates. The other is poly pipe. Hooked to the well, and laid along the highest end of the row and then cut with the pointed end of a bottle opener and allowed to flood the middles.
Either of the three ways, sure beats carrying it by the bucketfull.
Thats alot of work! Wow!! So how often does the unit need to be moved throughout the day? How much water do you give it with each watering?
We have had a very wet summer. Only watered the garden twice so far this summer.
Had a big storm go thru the other night. One town had 11 inches of rain within a few hours. We had 4 inches which caused water in our finished basement.
Would LOVE to share some of this rain with you!!
Amazing! How does he keep from running ove the plants?!?! lol Sounds silly, I know, but I guess he goes between the rows w/his tires? That’s a hard workin man! Praying for rain…
In Iowa we have had a ton of rain this year. Makes for its own problems. No hay, long grass in yards, flooded everything including basements,no crops planted or needed to be replanted or never grew because of too much rain, etc., etc. I suppose it wouldn’t be farming if we had just the right amount of rain and sun. Everyone would think they could do it!
we use these on our farm, too. my husband and i have to get up in the middle of the night to go check on them ’cause sometimes they get a mind of their own! i don’t mind, though…alone time!
Irrigation is fascinating to me, we don’t do any irrigation in Ohio. But we’ve had more than enough rain this summer. We’re trying not to complain because its good for the crops, just not so good for trying to make hay. As someone else said though, it wouldn’t be farming if all the conditions were perfect, right??
do you think Keith could/would run those irrigation systems thru the woods from time to time and water my flowerbeds??
….well, it was a nice thought!! ask him, anyways just to see what he says!! Will would be eternally grateful, also, since he spends all spare time on the yard and flowers.
