  • Welcome!

I'm a farm wife, a mama and a photographer living in Virginia.

My camera is typically filled with images of sunrises, dusty fields, even dustier children and whatever we happen to be planting or harvesting at the time.

    Thanks for visiting the farm!

Nevermind Me

I took all of these pictures to show off the beautiful new blooms on the cotton plants.

And then my cousin George pointed out to me that cotton blooming right now isn’t necessarily a good thing.

This always – ALWAYS – happens when I plan a post without consulting the Cotton Husband. The whole darned post ends up being wrong.

I hate that.

I still haven’t verified anything with him yet because I just got back from the dentist and I got four, count ‘em FOUR, shots and he just laughs at me when I try to talk.

But the nice man down at the gin says that although the crops are certainly dry, if we get enough rain this week then cotton will make it – early blooms or no blooms.

So right or wrong, here are these purty picktures

of blooms that the Cotton Husband may or may not welcome.

When my face un-thaws, I’ll be sure to ask.

What happens if they bloom too early?

The Cotton WifeJuly 13, 2010 - 11:56 am

Katie, it’s a sign of not-enough-rain and the plants may not produce enough cotton to make a good crop. :(

Either way they are pretty pictures – I agree! Is it crazy that I think cotton blooms are prettier than roses?

Hope you’re feeling better after the trip to the dentist!!

Jennifer, they should be blooming!! They should begin to bloom around the 4th of July. NO blooms = no cotton!! Now, he may be saying that the squares should have starting setting…( (I think!!) but I think Keefys cotton looks marvy!

Thank goodness for farm wives who DO know what they’re talking about! :)

I hope your are thawed out by now. tee hee
Those blooms are pretty. I’ve never looked at them that close.
We have been getting rain this week down here and it looks like you may be getting it too. I sure hope so. Your cotton will sing with my garden!

I never knew cotton had blooms Can you get them in a bouquet? They might look nice on my table!

Hope your mouth is un-numb and that there is no bruising from the shots AND that it rains and rains and rains.

Blooming is most certinly a good thing! By September this white snow look should be happening! Here’s to hoping we get some rain so the blooms just don’t fall off and produce no bowls (or the bowls be so dry they just fall to the groud)!!! Pretty blooms…gotta love the farm life :)
