My family is fortunate that we don’t have to go through missing my brother and my dad alone. We are surrounded by people who still count them among their friends… just friends that are in a different place for the time being.
On Saturday, Dad and Michael’s favorite place in the world – the place where they hunted foxes together – held a memorial hunt in Dad’s memory to raise money for the American Cancer Society. People showed up to participate, life-long friends donated their time to cook and businesses donated prizes for the raffle.
The trophies handed out to the winners were only a fraction of the trophies that had belonged to Michael and to Dad. Unless you’re my mom who had to dust all of these trophies, it’s hard to imagine just how many there were.
Shelby handed out every single one of them with the help of two of Michael’s best friends, two people who worked very hard to make the day happen.
I don’t know how often we’ll make it back to Poole’s foxpen – I know Shelby will want to go as much as she can – but it will always be a special place to us simply because other than being at home, it was where my father and brother were the very happiest. We are eternally grateful that they had that.

Beautiful – what a nice way to remember them.
What a wonderful way to remember them and to let others share in their memories as well.
It is comforting to know that your dad and brother are together, and what a reunion that must have been! Hugs.
Beautiful post, Jennifer!
It made the tears well up.
Simply beautiful- it made me cry again! I love you for the beautiful person you are, inside as well as outside.
When I was very young I remember sitting on the porch with my Dad late at night listening to the hounds run fox. The next morning a few of the dogs would be laying in our yard waiting to be picked up. Thanks for the nice memories of my Dad too.
This week my grocery store had Dukes mayo on sale, it made me think of you.
You are very fortunate to have had these two men in your life. I know you are grateful for all the work their friends did in their memory.
Beautiful.
Great pictures and what a wonderful tribute to your dad and brother. And look at Miss Shelby so pretty!
